Society and Culture in the Himalayas
Three-day National Seminar held on 9-11 December 1991 at School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. The Seminar attracted wide participation from specialists and literateurs from the Himalayan states of Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. It was the first initiative to bring at one national forum such experts from the grassroots and eminent specialists including Prof. M.S. Agwani, Prof. B.K. Roy Burman,Prof. P.S. Ramakrishnan, Prof. S.K. Pathak, Prof. P.N. Pushp, Sh. T.N. Kaul, Dr. M.C. Joshi, Mr. John S. Lall, Prof. T.N. Madan, Prof. B.R. Grover, Prof. Harjeet Singh, Prof. K. Warikoo and Prof. Anand Kumar.

Emergence of New Order in Central Asia
Two-day International Seminar held on 21-22 January 1993 at School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Among the notable participants in this International Seminar were eminent area specialists like Prof. G. Khidayatov of Tashkent University, Dr. S. Gulbahar of Kazakh Academy of Sciences, Prof. Stephen Cohen, University of Illinois, USA, Prof. R. G. Cultural Heritage of Western Himalayas and its Future
Two-day International Seminar held on 23-24 March 1994 at India International Centre and School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University New Delhi. More than one hundred delegates from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Universities of Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu, Kashmir, Nainital, Bangalore, Vishwabharti and the Asiatic Society, Calcutta and a number of literateurs, writers and artists belonging to the region participated. Eminent academics and cultural personalities who attended the seminar included Prof. Satish Sabharwal, Prof. T.N. Madan, Prof. P.N. Pushp, Prof. S.K. Pathak, Prof. Harjit Singh, Prof. Hari Om, Dr. A.R. Yousuf, Dr. V.C. Ohri, Ghulam Rasool Santosh, Dr. K.N. Pandita and Prof. K. Warikoo. Among the notable foreign participants were Prof. Mohd. Ethno-Cultural Heritage of Gujjars
Three day National Seminar at Jammu University, Jammu, 8-10 May 1999 organised in collaboration with the National Museum of Mankind (Bhopal) and Gurjar Desh Charitable Trust, Jammu. The Seminar-cum-Exhibition consolidated and projected the distinct ethno-cultural heritage and life style of the Gujjars and Bakarwals of Jammu and Kashmir, analysed their problems and deliberated upon the possible solutions.
A unique feature of this Seminar was the enthusiastic participation of Hindu, Sikh and Muslim Gujjar representatives from Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. They included Ashok Mellu (Himachal Pradesh), Roshan Lal Arya and Col. Ajit Singh (Punjab), Dr. R.P. Khatana (Haryana), S.M. Zafar (Delhi), Dr. Roop Singh (Bhiwadi, Rajasthan), Mohd. Sami Khatana (Lucknow), Haji Wali Mohd (Mumbai), in an expression of their solidarity and collateral ties with their Muslim Gujjar counterparts in Jammu and Kashmir. Among the eminent academics and specialists participating in the Seminar were Prof. R.R. Besides, more than eight hundred Gujjar and Bakarwal delegates from distant areas of Jammu and Kashmir State – Kupwara, Bandipora, Baramulla, Srinagar, Poonch, Rajouri, Doda, Udhampur, Kathua, Akhnoor, Bari Brahamna and Jammu, participated in the 3-day deliberations of the Seminar. The Seminar evoked positive response from the State government, decision makers, civil servants and media as well which was evidenced by the participation of two Ministers Bodh Raj Bali and P.L. Handoo; parliamentarians Chaman Lal Gupta, Mangat Ram Sharma, Vaid Vaishno Dutt; Members of State Legislature, M.Y. Taing, Begum Salaria, Syed Mohd. Akhoon, Abdul Rahman Badana and Ashok Khajuria and almost all members of the press corps and faculty and students of Jammu University.

Child Labour and Rehabilitation: Some Issues
Two day National Seminar/Workshop at India International Centre, New Delhi, organised on 30-31 July 1999 with the support of International Labour Organisation (Delhi). More than 100 NGO representatives, social scientists and population experts participated in this Seminar. The Seminar was inaugurated by Justice M.N. Venkatachaliah, Chairman, National Human Rights Commission. Dr. L. Mishra, Secretary, Ministry of Labour, Government of India presided over the inaugural function. The Seminar provided a forum to government agencies, policy planners, experts, academics, manufacturers, educational planners, NFE teachers, released children, NGOs and social activists to come together and share their experiences and views. Representatives of UN agencies like ILO, UNICEF, UNDP, World Bank, UNESCO, National Human Rights Commission, Ministry of Labour, Textiles and Education, Giri Institute of Development, Institute of Public Opinion, Delhi besides about one hundred delegates from various NGOs like Project Mala, SACCS, AVA, UPVHA, REHA, Rugmark, Terre Des Hommes, Save the Child, Gramodaya, Mukti Ashram, Peace Trust, CREDA, IGSS, IDEA, VVGNLI etc. actively participated in this Seminar thereby making it a unique venture in bringing all the agencies concerned with the Child Labour issues, together at one platform.

Cultural Heritage of Indian Himalayas: Three-day International Seminar was organised by the Himalayan Research and Cultural Foundation in collaboration of Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manava Sangrahalaya, Bhopal, 3 to 5 March 2001. 22. Cultural Heritage of Jammu and Kashmir
Organised a three-day National Seminar and Exhibition on Cultural Heritage of Jammu and Kashmir and a three-day Workshop on Heritage Conservation, accompanied by exhibition of paintings and sculptures by well-known artists and painters at Abhinav Theatre Complex, Jammu (29 February – 2 March 2004) with the support of J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages and PATH (NGO) both in Jammu, thereby projecting the rich and variegated ethno-cultural heritage of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh, besides, actively engaging in the dialogue of various cultures.

24. Organised a two-day national seminar on Network of NGOs for Peace and Conflict Resolution with special reference to Women Studies in association with the M.K.P. (PG) College, Dehradun, Uttaranchal on 11-12 March 2006 at the College premises, Dehradun.
25. Energy and Transport Linkages between Central Asia and South Asia
Organized a three-day International Seminar on Energy and Transport linkages between Central Asia and South Asia in association with Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi from 25 to 27 November 2006. Prominent participants in this Seminar included 17 leading academics, area specialists and energy specialists from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey, China, Russia, Japan, Israel, USA, Netherlands, Hydrocarbon Development Institute of Pakistan, Islamabad (Pakistan), Energy Charter Secretariat, Brussels (Belgium), and over 100 Indian specialists.
26. Religion, Culture and Harmony in South Asia
Organised a Seminar in association with Interfaith International at Palais des Nations, Geneva on 23 March 2007.
27. The International Festival – Sounds of Eurasia, Ulan-Ude, Russia
Organised an Indian Cultural Festival as part of The International Festival – Sounds of Eurasia at Ulan-Ude, Republic of Buryatia, Russia from 25 to 30 September 2007, in collaboration with the East Siberian Academy of Culture and Arts and the Ministry of Culture and Mass Communications, Buryatia Republic of the Russian Federation. The group of Indian musicians included Mrs. Savita Bakshi – Sitar, Mr. R.K. Majumdar – Santoor, Mr. Anil Kaul – Tabla, Mr. Rakesh Anand – Flute/Bansuri and Mr. Ravinder Kaul – Comperer, which was led by Prof. K. Warikoo, Secretary General of Himalayan Research and Cultural Foundation. It has been for the first time that any Indian cultural group has visited Buryatia/East Siberia.

Organized a one-day International Seminar on Hungarian Explorers and Travellers in India in association with Hungarian Information and Cultureal Centre, New Delhi and Hungarian Geographical Museum, ERD on 4 October 2007 at New Delhi. Among the notable participants were Dr. Istvan Huller, Minister of Education and Culture, Hungary; Dr. Geza Palmai, Ambassador of Hungary in India; Dr. Janos Kubassek, Director, Hungarian Geographical Museum; Dr. Imre Lazar, Director, Hungarian Information and Cultural Centre, New Delhi; Prof. Lokesh Chandra, Prof. K. 29. Religion, Culture and Security in Central & South Asia
Organized a three-day International Seminar on Religion, Culture and Security in Central & South Asia in association with Department of Political Science, University of Kerala, at Trivandrum, from 29 February to 2 March 2008. Prominent participants in this Seminar included 11 leading academics and area specialists from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, China, USA, Tajikistan and Singapore and over 100 Indian specialists from University of Kashmir, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Kerala University, Madras University and University of Rajasthan.
30. 24 Idiots in Holi : A Theatre Workshop
Organized a four-day Theatre Workshop titled 24 Idiots in Holi: A Theatre Workshop in collaboration with National School of Drama and J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages at Abhinav Theatre, Jammu from 2-5 October 2009. Workshop was conducted by renowned theatre director and Former Director of Shri Ram Centre for Performing Arts, New Delhi, Mushtaq Kak. During the workshop 24 theatre actors and directors had intensive training sessions on acting skills.
31. Historical, Cultural and Economic Linkages between India and China’s Xinjiang Region
Organized a two-day International Seminar on Historical, Cultural and Economic Linkages between India and China’s Xinjiang Region at Indian Council of Social Science Research, New Delhi from 3 to 4 May 2011. Prominent participants in this Seminar included 11 leading academics and area specialists from Xinjiang Academy of Social Sciences, Urumqi; Central Asia Regional Development Research Centre, Xinjiang; Ethnic Minority Development Research Centre, Beijing; Peking University, Beijing; Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi; Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts, New Delhi; International Academy of Indian Culture, New Delhi and University of Kashmir, Srinagar.

Organized a Seminar The Conflict in Afghanistan and Human Security: Impact upon Central and South Asia in association with Al Hakim Foundation and Rencontre Africaine pour la Defense des Droits des l’homme at Palais des Nations, Geneva on 12 March 2012. Main speakers included Dr. Charles Graves, Biro Diawara, Prof. K. Warikoo, Prof. Riyaz Punjabi and Mr. Yerlan Alimbaev of the Embassy of Kazakhstan.

Organized a round table discussion Remembering the Bamiyan Buddhas at India International Centre, New Delhi on 7 May 2012. Main speakers included Ambassador Chinmoy R. Gharekhan, President, Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts; Dr. Lokesh Chandra, Director, International Academy of Indian Culture; Prof. K. 34. Religion, Culture and Harmony in South Asia
Organised a Seminar in association with Interfaith International on the theme Religion, Culture and Harmony in South Asia at UN Palais des Nations, Geneva on 23 March 2007. The HRCF documentary film on Shrines and Pilgrimages of Kashmir which was screened on this occasion, was highly appreciated by the audience as being objective and a welcome break from the undesirable rhetoric. Prof. K. Warikoo, Prof. Riyaz Punjabi, Prof. Tatiana Shaumian of Moscow and Sardar Shaukat Ali Kashmiri were the main speakers.
35. War on Terrorism and Human Security
Co-sponsored an open dialogue on the theme of War on Terrorism and Human Security in collaboration with Interfaith International and Al-Hakim Foundation at UN Palais des Nations, Geneva on 24 September 2009. The main speakers included Shaukat Kashmiri, Abdul Hamid Khan, Prof. K. Warikoo, Dr. Abdul Amir Hashom of Al-Hakim Foundation, Ms. Edurne Jrindo, Biro Diawara and Fweley Diangitukwa of Schiller University, Switzerland.

Organised in collaboration with NGOs- RADDHO, Al-Hakim Foundation and Interfaith International a Seminar on The Conflict in Afghanistan and Human Security: Impact upon Central and South Asia on 12 March 2012 at the UN Palais des Nations, Geneva. Main speakers included Prof. K. Warikoo, Dr. Charles Graves, Prof. Riyaz Punjabi, Biro Diwara and Mr. Yerlan Alimbaev of Kezakhstan Embassy in Geneva.

Organized in association with RADDHO and Al-Hakim Foundation a Public Dialogue on the Right to Cultural Heritage at UN Palais des Nations on 15 March 2013. 38. Preparing the Coalition to support Proclamation of 19 August as the International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism
Organized in association with RADDHO and Al-Hakim Foundation a Public Dialogue on the theme Preparing the Coalition to support Proclamation of 19 August as the International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism at UN Palais des Nations on 20 September 2013. Main speakers included Biro Diwara, Imam Maytham Al-Salman of Bahrain, Prof. K. Warikoo, Nad Mylvaganam of British Tamil Forum and Sultan Shahin. One minute silence was observed to remember the victims of terrorism around the world before starting the proceedings.
39. Eurasia and India: Regional Perspectives
Organised a two-day international seminar Eurasia and India: Regional Perspectives on 11-12 November 2013 at the Indian Council of Social Science Research Conference Hall, New Delhi. Renowned academics including 10 specialists from Russia (Buryatia, Tuva, Khakassia, Altai, Moscow), Kazakhstan and over 70 participants from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Jamia Millia Islamia, Kashmir University, Indian Council of World Affairs and other think tanks, besides diplomats from embassies of Kazakhstan and Russia participated in this seminar.
40. Afghanistan Post-2014
Organised in association with RADDHO and FICIR a joint seminar on Afghanistan Post-2014 at UN Palais des Nations on 17 March 2014. Main speakers were Prof. K. Warikoo, Sultan Shahin and Mumtaz Khan (based in Canada), Imam Maytham Al-Salman (Director of Bahrain Interfaith Center). Dr. Charles Graves (President, FICIR) chaired the meeting.

Organised in association with RADDHO, Al-Hakim Foundation and Fondation de L’entre-connaissance the Inter-Knowing Foundation a joint seminar on Religious Extremism and Terrorism in Asia and Africa at UN Palais des Nations on 11 March 2015. Main speakers were Prof. K. Warikoo, Prof. Riyaz Punjabi, Sultan Shahin, Rene Naba (journalist from France) and Shyihk Masbah (former advisor to Afghanistan President, Hamid Karzai). Mr. Biro Diawara of RADDHO chaired the meeting.

Organised in association with RADDHO, Al Hakim Foundation etc. an Open Dialogue on Religious Intolerance at UN Palais des Nations on 19 March 2015. Main speakers were Prof. K. Warikoo, Dr. Layla Abroomi (a Mandaean), President, Mandaean Human Rights Group, Mr. Hasso Hurmi (a Yazidi), President of Yazidi Foundation, Netherlands and Mr. Kamel Zozo (a Christian), President of Association Friends of Bartila, Iraq.
45. Altai-Himalayas
Organised a composite programme on Altai-Himalayas in association with India International Centre comprising a panel discussion, lecture cum slide show on Pilgrimage to Sumeru, Altai by Prof. K. Warikoo; lecture cum slide show on Altai-Himalayas: Two Magnets of Eurasian Civilisation by Dr. Irina Zhernosenko of Altai State Technical University, Barnaul; film on Indo-Altai Cultural Expedition, 2014-15 by Alfred Pozniakov, Videographer and traveler from Barnaul, at India International Centre, New Delhi on 27 July 2015. The programme was chaired by Dr. Lokesh Chandra, Chairman, Indian Council of Cultural Relations.
46. Remembering Victims of Terrorism
Organised in association with RADDHO and Al-Hakim Foundation a joint seminar on Remembering Victims of Terrorism at UN Palais des Nations, United Nations, Geneva on 22 September 2015. Main speakers were Prof. K. Warikoo, Dr. Charles Graves, Mr. Mohammad Al-Wazir, member of Sheba Rights collation, Prof. Riyaz Punjabi, Ms. Rajanidevi Seladurai (Tamil activist). Mr. Biro Diawara of RADDHO chaired the meeting. The seminar was well attended by over 100 participants including diplomats, NGO delegates etc.
47. International Day of Non-Violence
Organised in association with RADDHO and Al Hakim Foundation etc. a seminar on International Day of Non-Violence at UN Palais des Nations on 2 October 2015 to commemorate the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi. Main speakers were Mr. Reddy Naghabhushana Bollavaram, Dy. Permanent Representative of India to the UN, Geneva, Prof. K. Warikoo, Ms. Nazareth De Vieira (former First Lady of Guinea Bissao), Ms. Valeriane Bernard, Representative of Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University to the UN, Geneva, Prof. Riyaz Punjabi. Biro Diawara of RADDHO moderated the proceedings. The seminar was very well attended, by over 100 NGO delegates, diplomats working in the UN and also some members of Indian community based in Geneva.
48. The Sacred Altai (Report of panel discussion at IIC,21 February 2023)
The Himalayan Research and Cultural Foundation and India International Centre organised a discussion on the theme The Sacred Altai at IIC, Conference Room II on 21 February 2023. Gornyi Altai (part of Russian Siberia in mountainous Altai) is treated as sacred territory by its indigenous people since old times. The famed Sumeru Parvat is also located here. The people of Altai have great reverence for the Five elements and also Sumeru Mount, which are treated as sacred. There are many commonalities between the traditions and practices still prevalent in Altai and India. It is in this context that this discussion underlined such commonalities and importance of these traditions and practices for the preservation of eco-system and biodiversity ,both in Altai and India.

Dr. Mahesh Ranjan Debata, of Centre for Inner Asian Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi introduced the audience to the enormous work done by the Himalayan Foundation in terms of its over 20 books and regular publication of its quarterly journal Himalayan and Central Asian Studies, right from 1997. He showed slides of the book covers and special issues of the journal focused on Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Xinjiang, Kashmir, Kargil conflict, Indus Waters Treaty, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Buryatia, Khakassia, Altai, Myanmar, Gilgit Baltistan, Tajikistan, Yakutia, Siberia, Mongolia, North East India, Zoroastrianism, Women issues, Ecology, N.Roerich and so on. {rof. K.Warikoo,m Secretary Generalk of the Himalayan Foundation and Editor of the journal pointed 9out that all this was made possible with voluntary participation and collaboration of noted academics ,cultural specialists and institutions across the region ,both from India and neighbouring countries Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Mongolia, Russia, Siberain Republics of Buryatia, Khakassia, Tuva and Altai. He named the eminent academics and personalities from these countries who have participated in such a wonderful journey of bringing to fore the issues pertaining to the Himalayan and adjoining Central Asian region.

Prof. K.Warikoo narrated the wonderful experience of his pilgrimage to Sumeru (using slide presentation). He pointed out that Altai is considered sacred by the indigenous people. Several sacral complexes include archeological, astronomical and ritual ceremonial complexes besides petroglyphs, natural objects,. Water, fire, trees, mountains. Nicholas Roerich was of the firm belief that Altai and Himalayas are two magnets ,two poles of a cultural axis.

Prof. Shashibala, Head, Indology Centre, Bhartiya Vidya Bhawan and an authority on ancient Indian knowledge system spoke on the sacredness of five elements in Indian ethos.

Prof. Rajnish Mishra of Centre for Sanskrit Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University dwelt upon the sacredness of water (jaltatva) in Kashmir.

Ms. Sunita Dwivedi ,silk road traveler and author, gave comprehensive report/slide presentation on the India and Central Asia :The Cultural Connect.

50. Prof. K.Warikoo participated in the III All-Russian Conference
Prof. K.Warikoo participated in the III All-Russian Conference on "Cultural; Heritage and Traditional Spiritual and Moral Values" organised by the Altai State Institute of Culture etc. at Barnaul, Russian Federation on 8-10 June 2023.Prof. Warikoo and Dr. Irina Zhernosenko made a presentation of the "Sacred Altai" Special issue of the journal Himalayan and Central Asian Studies (Vol. 26,Nos. 3-4,July-December 2022) at the seminar. Later on,Prof. Warikoo made a presentation of the video documentary on "Shrines and Pilgrimages of Kashmir".
